Our 100 Songs That Changed The Game actually started off as 65. Then it became 85, then 95 and, finally, a nice, round 100. We probably could have stretched it out to another 100 too, such was the scope and quality of the tracks nominated by our writers (and their enthusiasm to work on the feature) but we had to draw the line somewhere.
So we’ve ended up with 100 of the most musically, culturally and politically influential songs since World War II. Taken as a simple list, it’s a road map of some six decades of music, but we’ve provided extra directions with each individual song attached with notes from a writer passionate about its inclusion, as well as introductions to every featured decade to add extra perspective. As is human nature, I’m sure people’s instinct will lead them to call for the songs we’ve omitted, rather than celebrate what we’ve included, and we certainly welcome recommendations (maybe we can even fill that second 100), but do check out all the songs we’ve featured. They’re all great.
With a 19-page behemoth taking up a large chunk of this theme-less issue, we were able to fill the remaining pages with interesting pieces that we’d struggle to fit into an edition dedicated to a particular subject. Among them, Michael A. Gonzales examines an often untold chapter of the Stanley Kubrick legend: his working relationship with writer Jim Thompson, who played a big and often unrecognised part in helping launch the legendary filmmaker’s career. Derek Owens interviews prickly former porn-chronicler Luke Ford, and we’ve also got interviews with Race The Flux and Tandem Felix, joint winners of our recent Rock-Off Redemption event.
But before you get stuck in to all that and more I just want to give special mention in this issue to those who have provided the photography and illustrations. As a writer and editor I’ve always intended One More Robot to be a ‘words first’ kind of magazine, but much effort goes into providing the artwork. A big shout out to all you guys. You’ve helped make this the best looking issue ever.
