Mitten

It’s been fun working on the electronic section of The Deli’s special CMJ Festival issue since it’s given me a chance to get acquainted with bands I most likely would have bypassed otherwise. Right now I’m all over Mitten and their first EP See You Bye, a masterful six track piece that does what all the best debut releases do: highlight everything that’s good about the band.

I’ve studied and interviewed them for the electronic segment, but really, ‘electronic’ doesn’t seem correct as it suggests heavy-artillery beats and speaking-destroying synths. Rather, Mitten’s sound fits snugly into the same brackets as The Postal Service and Au Revoir Simone; that is, delicate synth arrangements with pretty melodies sitting on top, performed by a sweet vocalist which just enough light guitar licks thrown into keep listeners guessing.

They’re also doing all the things indie bands do these days, including Twitter, Tumblr and YouTube.
